Dedicated Servers
Our dedicated servers are full-featured, reliable and fully supported. Yet they are affordable. They're configured to your specification, and housed in our own secure and reliable datacentre facility.
Virtual Servers
Virtual Servers are an alternative to dedicated servers, using virtualisation technologies. It looks just like a dedicated server, it has a full operating system to which you’ll have root/administrator access. However the hardware on which it runs is virtualised.
Most dedicated servers are vastly under-used. Following industry tests it was found that at any given time, about 75% of dedicated servers are being used less than 25% of their maximum capacity. That’s a big waste of energy and money.
By “pooling” both backend storage and frontend servers we can cut hardware costs dramatically, and pass that saving on to you.
Because you’re guaranteed the memory (RAM) and storage space, and guaranteeing a share of CPU time, you’re never going to find your Virtual Server clutching for resources.
Infrastructure
The key to the reliability of internet services depends almost entirely on the infrastructure. We aim for 100% uptime, so resilience in the infrastructure is key.
Internet Connectivity
The datacentres operate a 10GB/sec fibre-optic metropolitan area network spanning six facilities in Manchester, connecting all datacentres facilities to the internet.
Multiple connections are maintained to upstream bandwidth providers at each, giving complete independence from the failure of any bandwidth provider, facility or the London Internet Exchange (LINX); which worryingly carries between 70 and 95 percent of all UK traffic.
Power
The datacentres are supplied by two diverse 6.6KV feeds from the national grid. Two 2MW Generators with at least 7 days supply of fuel provide full capability to sustain long power outages. APC InfraStruXure UPS units, in n+1 mode provide power to sustain load until the generators start up as well as ensuring a clean electrical supply. All of which allows for a corresponding 100% power availability SLA.
Cooling
N+1 Air conditioning is provided by under floor cooling, the air flow is directed appropriately by grilles in the floor. The capacity of the equipment is such that a failure of one unit can be handled by the other units.
Fire prevention
A full VESDA system that provides early detection of smoke is in place so that any potential fire is detected before it can develop. In the extremely unlikely event that a fire does develop a FM200 gas fire suppression system is triggered.
Security
The datacentres are based on Manchester TechnoPark which has security staff on site 24/7. CCTV cameras (both internal and external), motion detection and a key fob access system ensures a high level of security with multiple layers of defence.
